How Does Diode Laser Hair Removal Work?

Diode laser hair removal works by using a concentrated beam of light that is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle. This light energy is converted into heat, which damages the hair follicle and inhibits future hair growth. The diode laser emits a specific wavelength of light that is selectively absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the hair follicle, while sparing the surrounding skin. This is why diode laser hair removal is most effective on people with fair to medium skin tones and dark hair, as the contrast between hair and skin allows us to target the hair follicle more precisely.

During the procedure, the laser is applied to the skin using a handheld device. At iBeauty Center we also use gel; a cooling mechanism that protects the skin and minimizes discomfort. The laser energy is delivered in short pulses, and each pulse can treat multiple hair follicles at once. After treatment, the damaged hair follicles will shed their hairs within a week or two. Multiple treatments are usually needed to achieve long-lasting results, as hair grows in cycles and the laser can only target hair follicles that are in the active growth phase. The number of treatments needed varies depending on the area being treated, but most people require 6 to 8 sessions spaced several weeks apart to achieve optimal results.
